Flavia Pennetta defeated Alexa Glatch 6-3, 6-1 to give Italy a 1-0 lead over the United States in the Fed Cup final 2009.

Pennetta used her consistent baseline game to get past Glatch, breaking early in the first set to set the tone, then cruising in the second set.

Glatch managed to break Pennetta in the opening game of the second set but then the Italian took control.

Pennetta finished with 33 winners to Glatch’s 14 and broke the American five times.

Francesa Schiavone plays Melanie Oudin in the second singles while reverse singles and doubles will be played on Sunday.

“It was very emotional with the national anthem (before play started). I almost wanted to cry. I managed to play out the game well without being too spectacular but staying calm.” said Pennetta.

“I’m really happy about this first match,” added Pennetta, who enjoyed plenty of support from friends and family in the stands. “It’s tough to go to the court and play your best tennis when you play such a big event.”

“At the beginning I thought I had a couple of chances but she played extremely well. There were a few things which let me down.” Glatch commented.
