Timea Bacsinszky defeated Sabine Lisicki 6-2, 7-5 to win the Luxembourg Open title, her first WTA Sony Ericsson title.
Bacsinszky won the battle on Sunday with her fourth upset victory this week by beating a player 42 places ahead of her in the rankings.
In the semifinals, she had upset Yanina Wickmayer, ending the Belgian’s eight-match winning streak.
Bacsinszky won the first four games in a row and was on serve from there to take the first set, 6-2. The second set stayed on serve until 4-4 when Bacsinszky broke again for 5-4 and a chance to serve for the title. Lisicki broke back but was again broken to end the final match.
“I’m really happy with the way everything went today. I played in a smart way and just went for it. I wasn’t nervous at all,” Bacsinszky said. “It’s great to win my first title. I don’t think I’ve realized what it means for me yet. For now I just want to stay focused because I have another tournament next week.”
“Timea played well. My leg was hurting a bit but I still tried to fight. I rushed too much today and I could tell that I was tired from my semifinal,” Lisicki said. “I didn’t take my chances but you can always learn from something like this.”
