Wimbledon Semifinals: Serena Williams beats Elena Dementieva to reach Wimbledon final
Serena Williams has rallied to beat Elena Dementieva 6-7 (4), 7-5, 8-6 and reach the Wimbledon final for the second year in a row.
Williams saved a match point with a backhand volley while trailing 5-4 in the third set.
Williams dominated on her serve in the first set after being broken in the first game of the match, but she couldn’t hang on in the tiebreaker. In the second, Williams went up a break early but allowed Dementieva back into the match before breaking again.
“Elena played so well and we gave the crowd a wonderful match,” Serena said in a courtside interview.
When asked about her thoughts as the Russian held a point for the match, Serena said: “I thought ‘ace’, ok it’s my serve if I can just stay calm and try and think positive.”
In Saturday’s final at Wimbledon, Serena Williams will face the winner of the other semifinal match between her sister, Venus Williams, and the word number 1, Dinara Safina.
