Wimbledon 2009: Venus Williams wins as Ana Ivanovic retires at Wimbledon

Venus Williams beats Ana Ivanovic when the Serb retired injured in their fourth-round clash.

Venus was making a mockery of Ivanovic’s former world number one ranking by storming to the first set 6-1 when the Serb called for the trainer in the opening game of the second.

Ivanovic took a 10-minute break during the first game of the second set to have her left thigh taped by a trainer. She returned for two more points, but after hitting a service winner to take the game, she began crying as she walked to her chair and told the umpire she was retiring.

Venus Williams will next play against Agnieszka Radwanska, who beat Melanie Oudin, for a place in the semi-finals.
