Wimbledon 2009: Caroline Wozniacki works hard to win at Wimbledon
Caroline Wozniacki defeated Kimiko Date Krumm 5-7 6-4 6-1 in the opening round at Wimbledon.
Date Krumm, playing for the first time at Wimbledon since 1996, won the first set but lost her way after the ninth seed edged the sixth game.
Wozniacki gained reward with a number of winners down the line and made short work of taking the second set.
Date Krumm needed an injury time-out, and Wozniacki cruised to secure the win.
It was a roaring start from Date Krumm as she blew her Danish opponent away to take the first set 7-5.
With Date Krumm leading 3-1 in the next, a huge upset was on the cards but despite a few nervy serves, Wozniacki battled hard to win a tense service game to get within one game.
The momentum turned on its head and Wozniacki grabbed a service break and soon levelled the match with her opponent looking increasingly weary.
Wozniacki’s spark had finally been ignited and with her explosive forehand she raced to a 4-1 lead in the deciding set.
The heat and dwindling energy levels seemed to restrict Date Krumm’s efforts as the match progressed and after she was forced into an injury time-out, a hugely relieved Wozniacki served out to claim an anxious victory.
